These are the fruits of the thorny tree or shrub of the same name. They can be orange or reddish in color, having a sour taste with a slight bitter note. Sea buckthorn berries contain many antioxidants and vitamins (A, B1, B2, B6, B9, C, E, K, P, F, inositol and choline), as well as minerals of manganese, calcium, potassium, sodium, iron, magnesium and other valuable trace elements. To all these are added beta-carotene, polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3, omega-6, omega-7 and omega-9), complex oils from which sea buckthorn oil is obtained, volatile oils, phytosterols, serotonin, tannins, folate, flavonoids, enzymes, pectins, biotin and amino acids. Sea buckthorn can be consumed separately, fresh or in the form of equally fresh juice or syrup. It can also be ground together with sugar and stored for long periods in the form of preserves, jam, jelly, marmalade, compote and various fruit drinks. These fragrant berries are added to tea, liqueurs and wines, and can be used as a decorative element for desserts and hot dishes.
